Cinco De Mayo Swim for ALS
It was a beautiful Saturday morning at Anaeho'omalu Bay within the Waikoloa Beach Resort as 300+ swimmers gathered for the annual Cinco De Mayo, 1-mile, ocean swim. I’ve never participated in this particular open water swim but have swam in the bay for Lavaman Triathlon several times in the past so I was familiar with the territory. The reef in “A” Bay comes all the to the shoreline so the race director gave direction for everyone to swim 150 yards or so to where several paddle boarders were gathered.
I was prepared for a beach start and had already lined up on the inside of the mass of ready swimmers. I was caught off guard as the entire group jumped in the water on his direction in front of me and began swimming out to sea! By the time I made it to within 50 yards of the start line-they fired the gun and everyone took off in one huge white water “ball”. Oh well-my best laid plans to swim a fast first leg to the yellow buoy, 1/2 mile out, were now interrupted by 250, determined swimmers.
Once I re-calculated m...
New 18 Hole Putting Course in Waikoloa Beach Resort
We live in an oasis surrounded by thousands of acres of lava so when new activities become available to this somewhat isolated location….it’s big news :)
Check out the photo of a zoning sign that appeared in the Waikoloa Beach Resort near the King’s Shop’s gas station. These are the signs mandated by the County whenever a use permit is being requested by a land owner and in this case a 18 hole putting course. The Tax Map Key listed is on or near the King’s Shops.
I called the County Planning Department and they mentioned the hearing is in Kona at the County Facility on February 15th if you are interested in contributing to public comment or learning more about this project.
I see it as a “good thing” as low impact, children friendly activities for those windy days or early evenings under the stars are rare here. Let’s hope they are approved and they actually follow through and build it sooner than later!

Neighbors push back against resort project

KAILUA-KONA - The Leeward Planning Commission Thursday held off on approving a slate of requests from Waikoloa BC, LLC, related to a proposed 40-unit resort development.
Instead, it scheduled a date for commissioners to visit the site next month before considering the matter again.
The commission's decision came after a packed morning hearing at the West Hawaii Civic Center with presentations and testimony that went into the early afternoon.
The vast majority of the more than ...
Waikoloa Beach Resort-Lava Lava expands vacation rental options!
Many of you are familiar and have enjoyed the very uniquely located and beautiful ocean front Lava Lava Beach Club Restaurant located in the Waikoloa Beach Resort. For those of you that are not familiar with this location, you access the site by proceeding into the Waikoloa Beach Resort, passing the Queen’s Market Place then taking a left (south) and following the signs toward the parking lot at Anaeho’omalu Bay. Lava Lava sits on a 10 acre site that was sold to the current owner WAIKOLOA BC LLC for $5.4m in July of 2004.
Lava Lava consists of an ocean front restaurant and 4, ocean front, cottages that are available for vacation rental. Their website describes the cottages this way, “…Our four contemporary Hawaiian cottages were individually designed, constructed, and decorated for the distinctive, laid back luxury lifestyle you’re looking for. Offering your own slice of the beach right on Anaeho’omalu Bay and one of the most beautiful shores of Waikoloa, you’ll be able to sleep to the sounds of the surf or sp...

7 homes under contract Developer’s representative reports!
I communicated recently with Brian Anderson’s sales team for an update on sales and development of their community. They report 7 units in the phase 1 section of single family homes are “under contract”.
They also report that an important part of their development plan has been changed. Instead of a community solar farm as initially planned, they will instead offer a roof top solar alternative via various lease options including an option to “buy out” the lease. They also mention “to ensure energy security, the micro grid has been designed with additional large community storage banks of batteries. We also augment our electrical demand by utilizing propane for our stoves, dryers and water heaters.” They further add, “The HE`E PV + Battery Storage Systems are state of the art, constructed of top quality equipment that is proven to be safe and reliable. The proprietary HE`E system is named after the Hawaiian Octopus for the system’s unique ab...
