Waikoloa Plaza Update June 2020

The last shopping experience to benefit the Kohala Coast was The Queen’s Market Place in the Waikoloa Beach Resort finished in 2006-7. Even though us locals frequent different stores and restaurants within the Queen’s Marketplace it does not have a “local” feel and doesn’t include a large grocery store like Foodland. Certainly Foodland Farms, a mini version of Foodland’s full service grocery store chain does benefit The Mauna Lani resort located at The Shops at Mauna Lani but the new full size, Foodland in the Waikoloa Plaza will be a welcome addition. According to their June 2020 Newsletter, “Waikoloa Plaza is currently 90% leased, with the first business’ openings anticipated for the second half of 2021.” Waikoloa Plaza will also include a variety of other tenants in addition to the Foodland grocery store. Waikoloa Village-New Shopping Center Coming Soon!

The new Waikoloa Plaza had its ground breaking ceremony on Friday, April 27th. The developer, Gary Pinkston announced several well known merchants as new tenants within his 130,000 S/F development. The merchants include Aloha Petroleum, Ace Hardware, Foodland, Fitness Forever, Family Health and Wellness, CrossFit AllStar, and dining outlets such as Balimo’s Pizza, Chef TK, L&L Hawaiian BBQ, Strato’s New York Pizzeria, SushHi and Bodhi Tree Juicery, Nail Salon, Island Holistic Healing, Verizon, Longs Drugs, Maui Tacos, Dunkin’ Donuts, Denny’s, The UPS Store and McDonald’s, and others. Mr. Pinkston also mentioned they are pursuing a hotel zoning on part of the site to satisfy what he states is a need for additional hotel rooms due to Waikoloa Beach Resort’s Hilton changing their northern tower into time share units from hotel rooms. Waikoloa Beach Resort-Queen’s Marketplace-Waikoloa Luxury Cinemas opening December 22, 2017! I just received confirmation from Mike Trettin, General Manager of the new Waikoloa Luxury Cinemas, that they are planning to open on December 22, 2017 in the Queen’s Marketplace next to the food court area. After the initial press release in August of 2016, construction has been ongoing on this long awaited amenity to the Kohala Coast. The resort communities are somewhat isolated from Kona where the two theaters are located 25-35 miles away from the new cinema in the Waikoloa Beach Resort. Those living along the Kohala Coast will benefit from another activity close to home which is great for last minute plans and those days too windy for the beach for our visitors. Waikoloa Beach Resort-Lava Lava expands vacation rental options!

Many of you are familiar and have enjoyed the very uniquely located and beautiful ocean front Lava Lava Beach Club Restaurant located in the Waikoloa Beach Resort. For those of you that are not familiar with this location, you access the site by proceeding into the Waikoloa Beach Resort, passing the Queen’s Market Place then taking a left (south) and following the signs toward the parking lot at Anaeho’omalu Bay. Mauna Kea Beach Hotel Owner Files Motion to Subdivide November 2017

The resort has asked the county Planning Department to subdivide a 208-acre plot to take out 6.9 acres north of the hotel. The property, located on Mauna Kea Beach Drive 60 feet from the rocky shoreline, would be developed with nine upscale residences. The revenue from the development would pay for improvements to the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, Craig Anderson, vice president of operations, said. Among the likely upgrades are a fitness center and spa, as well as other improvements, he said. The project has a long way to go.
